From humble beginnings to becoming the Pride of the North
Oshigambo High School was established by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oshigambo, Oshikoto Region, northern Namibia. Initially serving as a church-affiliated secondary school offering education to local learners in grades 7–12, it laid the foundation for what would become one of Namibia's premier educational institutions.
The school quickly became known for its academic excellence and strong discipline, attracting students from across northern Namibia. Under the guidance of dedicated teachers and church leadership, Oshigambo developed a reputation for nurturing well-rounded students prepared for both higher education and community service.
The school expanded its facilities to accommodate more students and introduced new subjects in Science, Commerce, and Social Sciences, broadening its curriculum beyond traditional offerings. This expansion solidified Oshigambo's position as one of Namibia's leading institutions, preparing learners comprehensively for national examinations.
Under Principal Timoteus Ndakunda's visionary leadership, the school strengthened its academic programs and pastoral care systems. His commitment to holistic education emphasized character development alongside academic achievement, establishing traditions that continue to define Oshigambo today. The school's reputation for producing disciplined, well-rounded graduates grew significantly during this era.
The Oshigambo River broke its banks for the first time in 50 years, with floodwaters separating the school from its hostel. Students and teachers faced the difficult choice of crossing the river at risk or walking 3 km to reach the school. President Hifikepunye Pohamba personally promised a bridge to resolve this issue, highlighting the school's importance at a national level and demonstrating the government's commitment to education in northern Namibia.
Principal Fillipus Henock's tenure saw continued infrastructure development and the strengthening of the school's academic programs. His leadership emphasized the importance of Science and Mathematics education, establishing specialized programs that prepared students for STEM careers and higher education. Under his guidance, the school maintained its high academic standards while adapting to modern educational needs.
The school consistently emphasized sciences and languages from Grade 10 onwards, preparing learners for Grade 11 and 12 national examinations. Oshigambo became known for producing graduates who excel in higher education and professional fields, with many alumni becoming doctors, engineers, lawyers, educators, business leaders, and government officials across Namibia and beyond.
Oshigambo High School introduced the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level program, becoming one of the few schools in northern Namibia to offer this internationally recognized qualification. This program opened doors for students to access universities worldwide, significantly enhancing their global competitiveness and providing pathways to prestigious institutions in Europe, America, Asia, and Australia.
Under the current leadership of Principal Pinehas Ekongo, Oshigambo High School continues to maintain its high standards while embracing modern educational innovations. The school now features state-of-the-art science laboratories, a well-equipped library with digital resources, modern boarding facilities with improved amenities, and comprehensive sports facilities, all while maintaining its founding Christian values and commitment to holistic education.
Oshigambo High School launches the Pioneers sub-school, starting with Grade 7. This historic expansion marks the beginning of our journey to become a comprehensive Grades 4-12 institution. The Pioneers program brings Oshigambo's tradition of excellence to younger learners, providing them with early exposure to our rigorous academic standards and strong Christian values. By 2029, we will offer continuous education from Grade 4 through Grade 12, ensuring students benefit from 9 years of transformative Oshigambo education.
Today, Oshigambo High School stands as a testament to over six decades of educational excellence. With 98% university placement rates, thousands of successful alumni serving in leadership positions across sectors, and recognition as one of Namibia's premier institutions, we continue to nurture future leaders who will shape our nation and world. Now expanding to serve students from Grade 4 through Grade 12, our commitment remains unchanged: providing quality Christian education that develops students spiritually, academically, and socially.
